Artwork & File Requirements

These guidelines apply to all DTF and UV DTF transfer orders. Files are printed exactly as submitted, so getting them right before you order is what determines your result.

We print your file as submitted

We do not edit, correct, resize, or colour-correct artwork before printing. You are responsible for reviewing your files before submission. As a matter of practice we try to flag files we expect to print poorly and will contact you before proceeding, but we cannot guarantee we will catch every issue, and doing so does not transfer responsibility for file accuracy to us.

1. Accepted file types

Our gang sheet builder and order forms accept six formats. They are not equally good, and the difference shows in the printed edge.

Format Type Preference Notes
PDF Vector Most preferred Cleanest edges at any size. Outline all fonts before exporting
AI Vector Most preferred Adobe Illustrator native. Outline all fonts; keep artboard at final size
EPS Vector Preferred Good alternative where PDF or AI is not available
SVG Vector Preferred Fine for flat graphics; effects and filters may not translate
PNG Raster Best raster option Supports transparency. Must be 300 DPI at final print size
JPG / JPEG Raster Accepted, but not recommended No transparency support — the background will print as a solid box

Why we push vector so hard

Vector artwork is stored as mathematical paths rather than a grid of pixels, so an edge stays razor-sharp at any size — a 2-inch logo and a 20-inch version of the same file both print with a clean, crisp outline. Raster files are fixed grids: scale one up and the edge softens and pixelates, and there is nothing we can do at the printer to recover detail that is not in the file. If you have a PDF or AI version of your design, send that one.

If you only have a JPG, we can still print it, but the background will print. There is no transparency information in a JPG file to remove. Convert it to a PNG with a properly removed background, or send us the original vector file if the designer still has it.

2. Resolution, line weight & quality standards

Specification Requirement
Recommended resolution 300 DPI at final print size
Acceptable resolution range 150–900 DPI
Minimum design size 0.25″ × 0.25″
Minimum free-standing line thickness 6 px / 0.02″ / 0.5 mm
Minimum positive space 2 pt
Minimum negative space 2 pt
Minimum outline weight 2 pt

Lines finer than the minimum may print, but at your risk — they are prone to breaking up or disappearing entirely, and we cannot reprint for detail loss below these thresholds. Vector files avoid this problem almost completely, because the line weight is defined rather than sampled.

Raster artwork must be supplied at 300 DPI at final print size. Enlarging a raster file beyond its native resolution reduces quality permanently and cannot be recovered by us.

3. Gang sheets — and our 22.3″ width

We print 22.3″ wide. Most of the industry prints 22″.

That extra 0.3″ is deliberate, and it matters more than it sounds. At 22″ you cannot fit two 11″ designs side by side — there is no room left for the spacing you need to cut them apart. At 22.3″ you can. Two 11″ designs, plus clearance between them and at the edges. On a large run that is a meaningful difference in how many designs you fit per yard, and it is why we built our sheets this way.

  • Maximum gang sheet width: 22.3 inches
  • Length is determined by the option you select at checkout
  • Gang sheets cannot exceed the maximum width
  • Files are printed exactly at the size submitted — we do not resize artwork
  • Leave at least 0.25″ between designs so they can be cut apart cleanly
  • Keep artwork at least 0.25″ inside the sheet edge
  • Nest small designs into the gaps around larger ones — you pay for sheet area, not design count

Our gang sheet builder outputs at high resolution and handles the layout for you. If you would rather lay out your own sheet and upload it as a single file, build it at exactly 22.3″ wide and follow the spacing rules above.

4. Colour mode & artwork setup

  • All artwork should be submitted in CMYK colour mode
  • RGB files are automatically converted to CMYK; colour shifts may occur during conversion
  • Spot colours are converted to CMYK
  • Avoid transparencies, glow effects, and gradients that fade out against a coloured garment — select the halftone option for these effects
  • Shadows and gradients may not print as they appear on screen

5. Backgrounds & transparency

  • Transparent backgrounds are required — PNG or a vector format
  • Files submitted with a background will print with the background intact, including white boxes behind the design
  • Check transparency by viewing your file over a coloured layer, not against your software's white canvas
  • JPG files cannot hold transparency at all — see Section 1
  • You are responsible for reviewing all files before submission

6. Fonts & vector files

All fonts must be converted to outlines or curves before submitting PDF, AI, EPS, or SVG files. Live or embedded fonts are not supported and may cause characters to substitute, reflow, or drop out entirely — and because we print files as submitted, that is what will appear on your transfer.

In Illustrator this is Type → Create Outlines. Save a copy with live text for your own future edits, and send us the outlined version. Note also that using a font on merchandise usually requires a commercial licence; many free and desktop licences exclude resale products — see our Copyright Guidelines.

7. Colour accuracy disclaimer

  • Colours on a screen may not accurately represent final printed colours
  • Screens use RGB; DTF printing uses CMYK. Exact matching cannot be guaranteed
  • We do not provide colour matching services, including Pantone matching, spot colour matching, or matching a previous order
  • Colour charts are provided for reference only
  • For colour-critical work, order a small sample run before committing to a large one

8. UV DTF artwork

The specifications above apply to UV DTF as well, with two additions. UV DTF is applied to hard surfaces rather than fabric, so design at the actual size of the object and account for curvature — a design that wraps a tumbler will distort at the edges unless you allow for it. Fine detail and small text hold up better on UV DTF than on fabric, but the same 0.25″ minimum size and 2 pt spacing rules still apply.

9. Pre-submission checklist

  • Sending a vector file (PDF or AI) if you have one
  • Background is genuinely transparent, checked over a coloured layer
  • Raster artwork is 300 DPI at the final print size
  • Document units are inches and dimensions are correct
  • Fonts are converted to outlines
  • Colour mode is CMYK
  • Nothing exceeds 22.3″ in width
  • At least 0.25″ spacing between designs and inside the sheet edge
  • Spelling and layout proofread — we print typos exactly as submitted

10. Intellectual property

By submitting artwork you confirm that you own the rights to the design or have obtained proper authorization to reproduce it. See our Copyright Guidelines and Content Standards.

11. Final notice

Orders may be cancelled and refunded if submitted artwork does not meet the requirements above. Submitting artwork constitutes acceptance of these Artwork & File Requirements, which form part of our Terms & Conditions.

Not sure about something? Just ask.

We would much rather answer a question before you order than fix a problem after. Email info@dtf4prints.com with your file or your question and a real person on our team will look at it and tell you straight. There is no charge and no obligation.
