How to Press DTF & UV DTF Transfers
Correct application is the difference between a transfer that lasts fifty washes and one that peels after two. Here are the settings, the steps, and the fixes when something goes wrong.

Before you start
Always test one first
Press a single transfer onto a scrap of the same garment, from the same batch, before running the job. Fabric blends vary between suppliers and even between dye lots. Five minutes of testing prevents a ruined run, and it is the single most effective thing you can do.
What you'll need
- Heat press (strongly recommended) or a household iron for small designs
- Parchment paper or a Teflon cover sheet
- Your DTF transfer
- Pre-washed garment — no fabric softener
- Optional but useful: an infrared thermometer and a heat press pillow
Recommended settings for DTF
Temperature: 300–320°F · Pressure: Firm · Press time: 10–15 seconds
These are our standard settings and they work across the fabrics we most commonly print for. When in doubt, start at 300°F with firm pressure for 10 seconds, then adjust upward. Firm pressure means the press is properly locked down — roughly 60 PSI on a press with a gauge.

Dye migration on polyester
Polyester dyes turn to gas at high temperature and bleed up through the print — a white design on a red shirt turns pink, sometimes hours after pressing. It is not a print defect and it cannot be reversed. The fix is prevention: press polyester cooler and longer rather than hotter and faster.
Step-by-step application — DTF
Pre-press the garment
3–5 seconds with the press closed and no transfer in place. This drives out moisture and flattens wrinkles. Moisture trapped in fabric is one of the most common causes of poor adhesion, and this step costs almost nothing.
Position the transfer
Printed side down against the fabric. Measure rather than eyeball it if placement matters. Heat-resistant tape holds it steady on tricky placements.
Press
Close the press at your fabric's temperature for 10–15 seconds with firm, even pressure across the whole design. Open carefully and check the design before you touch the film.
Peel
Our transfers peel hot or cold. Hot peel is faster for batch production; cold peel is more forgiving and is the safer choice for intricate designs or if you are still dialing in your press. Either way, peel slowly in one smooth motion at a low angle — do not pull straight up, and do not stop and start.
Re-press to finish
10–15 seconds with parchment paper or a Teflon sheet over the design. This seals the edges and embeds the adhesive into the fibers. It is what makes the print survive washing, and skipping it is the most common reason a transfer that looked perfect fails after a few washes.
Cool completely
Let the garment cool fully before wearing, folding, stacking, or washing.
If the design lifts with the film
Stop peeling. Lay the film back down over that area, close the press for another 5–8 seconds, then let it cool and try again. The adhesive had not fully bonded on the first pass. Forcing the peel at this point will tear the print.
Applying UV DTF transfers
UV DTF works completely differently from DTF and uses no heat at all. It is a peel-and-stick decal for hard, smooth, non-porous surfaces — tumblers, glass, metal, acrylic, wood, plastic, and phone cases. There is no heat press, no iron, no weeding, and no cutting machine involved.
Never put UV DTF in a heat press, and never apply it to fabric
UV DTF is rigid. It will not survive on a shirt, and heat will damage it. For fabric you want a standard DTF transfer.
Clean the surface properly
Wipe with a lint-free cloth and 90% isopropyl alcohol, then let it air dry for a minute or two. Factory residues, machine oils, and the natural oils from your own hands all prevent a permanent bond. This is the number one cause of edges lifting later.
Burnish before you separate
Before peeling anything, rub the whole transfer firmly with a squeegee or credit card. This makes sure the design is fully adhered to the clear carrier sheet and will lift away from the white backing cleanly.
Separate the backing
Peel the clear carrier sheet away from the white backing, taking the design with it. Work carefully near fine detail. If part of the design stays on the backing, press it back down and burnish that spot again.
Position and apply
Place it on the surface and smooth from the center outward, one side at a time, pushing air bubbles toward the edges. Take your time — the adhesive grabs immediately and repositioning is difficult.
Burnish thoroughly
Rub the entire design firmly through the carrier film, paying particular attention to the edges and any fine detail. Firm, even pressure is what makes the bond permanent.
Peel the carrier film
Peel slowly from one corner at a low, sharp angle, almost parallel to the surface. Do not pull straight up. If any part lifts with the film, lay it back down, burnish that area again, and continue.
Let it cure
The adhesive holds immediately but reaches full strength over 24–48 hours. Avoid washing or heavy handling during that window.
Care for UV DTF: hand wash only. Dishwasher heat and detergent break down the adhesive over time. Avoid soaking, abrasive sponges, and applying to anything that will be heated. Once cured, UV DTF is waterproof and highly scratch-resistant.
Using a household iron
A heat press gives far more consistent results, but an iron works for small DTF designs. Set it to the cotton setting with no steam, press firmly for 30–45 seconds moving slowly across the design, then re-press for another 30 seconds with parchment paper over it. An iron cannot deliver even pressure across a large design, so adhesion will not match a press. Irons are not suitable for UV DTF at all.
Tricky placements
- Over seams, zippers, and pockets — use a heat press pillow so the platen contacts the design evenly instead of bridging over the obstruction
- Hats and curved surfaces — use a cap press or a small platen; a flat press cannot make even contact on a curve
- Sleeves and small areas — a small interchangeable platen stops you pressing creases into the rest of the garment
- Designs wider than your platen — press in overlapping sections with parchment protecting the already-pressed area
- Batch production — leave a few seconds between presses so the platen recovers to temperature
Storing your transfers
- Keep flat, out of direct sunlight, in a cool dry place
- Do not stack heavy objects on printed sheets
- Avoid humidity — moisture affects the adhesive powder
- Stored correctly, transfers stay usable for roughly 12 months
Washing & care for DTF
Pass these on to your end customers. A large share of transfer failures blamed on print quality are actually wash-care failures.
- Wait 24–48 hours before the first wash so the adhesive reaches full bond strength
- Turn garments inside out before washing
- Wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent
- No bleach and no fabric softener — softener degrades adhesion over time
- Tumble dry low, or hang dry for best results
- Do not iron directly over the transfer
Troubleshooting

Your press may not be the temperature it claims
Platen thermostats drift over time and cold spots near the edges are common. If results vary depending on where the design sits on the platen, check the actual surface temperature with an infrared thermometer. This explains a surprising share of adhesion problems that look like transfer defects.
