The sizing guide on this page covers chest and full-front prints. Ordering by size also handles the placements a standard size chart misses, from sleeves and back collars to hats, bags, and baby clothes. Because you set the exact width and height, each transfer fits the item instead of the other way around.
Starting Sizes for Other Placements
- Left chest or pocket: 3 to 4 inches wide
- Sleeve or forearm: 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide, or a tall, narrow strip down the arm
- Back collar: 2.5 to 4 inches wide
- Hat front: 3 to 4.5 inches wide, kept under about 2.5 inches tall
- Tote bag: 8 to 10 inches wide
- Toddler front: 5 to 6 inches wide; baby bodysuit 3.5 to 5 inches
Treat these as starting points. Measure the flat, pressable area of your actual item, leave a small margin on every side, and adjust.
Check the Scale Before You Order
Print your design on paper at the exact size you plan to order, cut it out, and hold it against the garment. It takes two minutes and catches the most common by-size mistake: a design that looked right on screen but sits too large or too small on the real item.
Consistent Repeat Orders
By-size transfers also keep repeat logo orders consistent. A company that adds new staff every few months can reorder the same left-chest logo at the same dimensions each time, so every new uniform matches the last batch. Keep a note of the sizes you order for each customer and reorders become a one-minute task.
How DTF Compares
Weighing DTF against vinyl or screen printing for a single logo? Here is how the three methods compare.
| DTF Transfers | Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) | Screen Printing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-color art and gradients | Yes, printed in one pass | One color per vinyl layer | One screen per color |
| Setup charges | None | None | Screen setup for each color |
| Cutting and weeding | None | Required for every design | None |
| Short runs (1 to 24 pieces) | Practical at any quantity | Practical for simple designs | Setup makes short runs costly |
| Fabrics | Cotton, polyester, blends, nylon | Depends on the vinyl type | Best on cotton; polyester needs special ink |
| Where it wins | Multicolor designs at any quantity | One-color names, numbers, and specialty finishes | Very large runs of a single design |
